WMBD: County Courthouse fountain dyed purple for awareness

PEORIA, Ill – The Peoria County Courthouse fountain will look a little different in the month of October, it’s a story that’s making us central Illinois proud.
The Center for Prevention of Abuse and the county dyed the water purple this afternoon to recognize domestic violence awareness month. In the US five people are physically abused by intimate partners every 15 seconds. Directors say the celebration is to honor the victims and support the survivors.
“On a typical day 20,000 phone calls go into the domestic violence hot-line a day across the country,” said Carol Merna, Executive Director of the The Center for Prevention of Abuse. She adds, “ We have one locally that receives many calls, so that we know it exists and we want to reach out to as many people as we can to make sure they receive the help that they need.”
