Peoria Journal Star: Violence counseling program for young kids returns to Center for Prevention of Abuse

PEORIA, Ill. — Now that the state of Illinois has a budget in place, the Center for Prevention of Abuse has received grant money to re-start its Safe from the Start program.

The effort offers services for kids aged 5 and younger who have witnessed violence at home or in the community. It had been suspended in 2016 because of lack of state funds.

It’s funded now through a one-year, $121,500 grant from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.

“We are thrilled to bring back this important program and provide crucial services for children in our community,” said Carol Merna, executive director of The Center for Prevention of Abuse, in a news release. “Young children are exposed to many types of violence every day, including in school, at home, on the television, and even in their neighborhoods. We are proud to offer free and confidential services to help children and their families understand and cope.”
