WMBD: Ameren grant brings prevention education to over 100 schools

PEORIA – As agencies across the county feel the pressure from the budget impasse, Ameren Illinois steps up to help the Center for Prevention of Abuse.

Thursday, Ameren presented a $20,000 donation to the agency, as part of its Ameren Cares program. The money will provide prevention education services at more than 100 local schools.

The state owes the Center roughly $500,000, and director Carol Merna says the looming budget impasse is unsettling.

“The state funding is crucial for us. It’s a large part of our budget and I see that,” said Merna. “If we enter the third year without a state budget that we are looking at a derailment at some point.

The Center says several of its sister agencies may have to close. Private partnerships, like this grant by Ameren, have helped the center to operate at full capacity.
